Main Street Books, downtown Hattiesburg’s only independet bookstore will present So You Want to be a Writer? on Saturday, August 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. This workshop, held in partnership with the Mississippi Writer’s Guild, is open to anyone interested in writing a book, or for those with an interest in Mississippi literature.
So You Want to be a Writer? will feature two workshops; each led by award-winning Mississippi authors and writing experts, followed by lunch and a historical re-enactment of famous Mississippi authors.
Richelle Putnam, a speaker and writing instructor, will present Writing Fiction that People Want to Read. Putnam is a staff writer for Novel Advice, a web site offering advice to aspiring writers, and she has been published widely in journals, trade magazines and children’s literary publications. Her middle-grade fiction, Fallout, was released in March 2001.
Regina Richardson, a National Board Certified Teacher and a well-educated presenter on children’s literacy issues, will present “Writing for Young Children.” Richardson is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators; her first children’s book, Maggie’s Treasured Stone, which she both wrote and illustrated, was released earlier this year.
Following lunch, members of the Mississippi Writer’s Guild will present Honoring Historic Mississippi Writers. During this historical re-enactment, Guild members will dress according to their chosen writer’s era and tell the story of the author’s life in well-researched first person format. The “authors,” including representations of Eudora Welty, Muna Lee, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams and more, will tell of their Mississippi heritage and read selections from their works.
